We’ve been in the slab foundation leak business for over 25 years now and let me tell you, we know foundation issues.  We can spot them a mile away and usually tell you the cause with a few small diagnostic tests.  Here are a 4 ways to know that you have foundation issues that could be caused by water or sewer leaks.

  1.  Floors buckle or are uneven?buckledfloor_delong_leak

Many times a water or sewer leak can cause floors to buckle.  This is a quick sign that your foundation is shifting or water is causing wood floors to warp.  We’ve seen the worst of it.  If left alone for too long, floors will warp up to 2 or 3 inches.  When floors become uneven, it happens very gradually and usually it is unnoticeable.  If you place a golf ball in the middle of the room and it favors one direction, you might have a water or sewer leak.

2.  Standing water or puddles?

Standing water around your house is a sure sign that something is not right!

It’s a good idea to check around your house for standing water regularly.  Not all leaks will cause standing water, but most will.  It usually just depends on the location of the leak.  This is why a leak locator is necessary.  Many times we have customers that are positive they know where their water or sewer leak is, but one thing to remember is that water takes the path of least resistance.  This means that if the soil is permeable or slopes in one direction, the water is going to follow.

3.  Stuck doors and windowsStuck windows are never fun. Open and close your windows regularly to avoid this.

This is usually the first sign that every homeowner notices.  Doors don’t close like they should or they used to.  Windows can get jammed shut and take a lot of strength to get open.  Also windows won’t seal correctly when they are shut and you can feel airflow coming through.  The soil in DFW expands and contracts regularly so don’t fret if this happens.  Call a leak detector and make sure that you are using a soaker house around your foundation regularly.

4.  Cracks in walls

If you see cracks like this...Call a professional!

When a homeowner starts to see cracks in walls inside the home and outside the home, it’s usually time to have someone out to take a look.  Cracks in walls are usually a sign you have a problem.  It may not necessarily be a water or sewer leak, but something is happening that shouldn’t be.  Most foundation issues can be corrected with proper maintenance, but sometimes piers are needed to reset the foundation to its proper placement and discourage any other parts of the house from shifting as a result.

Maintenance is Key!

Maintaining a healthy foundation is key to preserving your home’s value.  Checking for cracks and floors warping/shifting regularly is a good way to stay on top of it.  If you are at all concerned, please call us to come perform diagnostic testing before you call in a foundation repair company.  Many foundation companies will assume you need piers when you might just need a few corrections due to a water or sewer leak.

Keep Your Sewer System Safe This Summer

Don’t let your sewer system turn into this

CIPP-broken-pipe

Keep your sewer system safe this summer.  It sounds strange but the summer is usually when we use the most water, do the most laundry, and clean the most dishes.  If you are having regular backup issues, Nu Flow Trenchless Sewer  & Slab Leak Repair not only repairs sewer lines, but aids in the flow of debris with its extra slick surface.

Here are a few tips to keep your system running smoothly:

Check for leaks throughout your home AND OUTSIDE

Check toilets, shower heads, faucets, washing machines, water heaters, and hose connections.  Small drips can waste a lot of water.  Look for water damage.  A good way to tell if you have a leak is to turn off all water and check the water meter in the front of back of the house.  If the meter is moving in the slightest bit, you probably have a leak…maybe a slab leak. Slab leaks can waste 1,000’s of gallons of water in a matter of days.  If you’re unsure of where it is, call a professional leak locator.

Use your dishwasher instead of hand washing dishes

Your dishwasher saves more money than you think.  According to ConsumerEnergyCenter.org, a load of dishes cleaned in a dishwasher requires 37 percent less water than washing dishes by hand. You can also save energy by letting the dishes in your dishwasher air dry.

Make sure to use all of your drains REGULARLY

If you have that bathroom in a part of the house that NO ONE ever uses, make it a point to go flush the commode once a week or use the sink.  Dried out sewer lines will crack and deteriorate quicker if they aren’t used. Slab leak repair is EXPENSIVE! If you have broken sewer lines already you can call a professional trenchless sewer repair company.  They can actually pull a sleeve into place that creates a new sewer pipe within the broken sewer pipe.

Rainfall can lead to expensive sewer repair.

Tree roots can cause SERIOUS sewer backup issues as roots are drawn toward the sewer line as a source of nutrition.   Have a plumber inspect your sewer line to access potential sewer line problems.  Trenchless sewer products are available that will completely block root intrusion.

WATCH WHAT YOU PUT DOWN THE DRAIN!

It’s easy to throw something down the garbage disposal, but if it get’s lodged in a sewer line, you’re in for an expensive and unnecessary drain cleaning.

If you are unsure of anything, don’t hesitate to call a plumber.  With a few simple questions, a plumber can usually figure out what’s wrong and guide you in fixing it.
